We offer an exciting and challenging work environment and we pride ourselves on teamwork and a professional and friendly work family.   The Chamber offers great benefits and opportunities for both professional development and career growth.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Development and implementation of Advantage Coastal Alabama programs.  While this five-year plan has been developed through a 10-month consensus-building initiative, the Director of Business Development will be in a unique position to actually build the programs from the ground-up.   He or she will be working under the close supervision and direction from the Chamber President and will be responsible for both new and existing business development programs.

The latest draft of the 5-year Strategic Plan is available at www.myonecoast.com and the current 1-year Tactical Plan is available at http://mygulfcoastchamber.com/files/319.pdf.

Duties will include but will not be limited to:

    • Assisting the President in successful implementation of all Business Development activities.

    • Assisting the President and future staff with public policy initiatives that benefit chamber members and provide a nurturing business environment in the Coastal Alabama region.  This includes but is not limited to developing and maintaining a grassroots program.

    • Providing state and local government interactions and assistance for businesses.

    • Working with our government partners to assist in their business development and recruitment efforts when needed.

    • Collaborating with area and regional economic development organizations on strategic regional initiatives that benefit Coastal Alabama.  This includes but is not limited to the Coastal Alabama Partnership, the Baldwin County Economic Development Alliance, Gulf Shores-Orange Beach Tourism, GUMBO, and other Chambers within our region.

    • Quantifying return-on-investment (ROI) on the Chamber’s business development and policy programs in order to assist our Director of Membership Development & Investor Relations in producing quarterly report sessions and other information for our ACA Investors and Chamber Members.

    • Creating and maintaining business development databases necessary for serving existing businesses and new industry.

    • Serving as the primary staff liaison for the Chamber’s Business Development Council and others as directed by the President.  In this capacity, he or she will work closely with the Vice Chair of Business Development and the Chair of the ACA Initiative.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education & Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree preferred, preferably in a related field

    • Five or more years

      • related experience working in the business development/public policy area

      • related experience preferably in an investor-supported business development environment such as a chamber of commerce, economic development organization, etc.

      • Experienced in developing and maintaining close relationships with business development officials in government and within the private sector.

Ability to Assimilate in a Chamber of Commerce Environment: The Business Development Manager will not operate within a vacuum.  First and foremost, the primary goal of the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber is one of support and advocacy for its members.   The Director of Business Development must realize that every aspect of his or her position has that primary mission in mind.   Previous experience in a membership-based business association is preferred.   This includes experience in planning, preparation, and execution of committee meetings, where duties include scheduling, publicizing, setting agendas, briefing committee leadership, taking accurate minutes or notes where needed, and being responsible for all follow-up, including minutes, follow-up duty checklists, and more.

    Other Skills and Abilities Required

    • Outstanding written, spoken communications and interpersonal skills are required.

    • Because the Chamber is a volunteer-driven and investor-supported organization, the applicant must have experience in work that specifically deals with volunteers.  This includes maintaining and nurturing effective relationships, having outstanding interpersonal communication skills, and more.

    • Experience in all major office-related computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.  Further, the applicant must be comfortable and competent with cloud-based applications, not merely computer-based ones. Candidate must possess effective writing skills and self-manage their own clerical duties. The candidate must possess strong office computer skills.  He or she must have spreadsheet skills necessary to create and administer budgets and reports that are attractive and meaningful.  He or she should also have presentation skills software to create effective and attractive presentations. Graphic software ability and knowledge is a plus.

    • This is a demanding full-time position that requires attendance at frequent meetings and events before and/or after the normal work day.  The successful candidate must have a schedule that is flexible enough to allow for these meetings.  Further, particularly during busy times, it will require extra hours and sometimes days or weekends to ensure successful events and projects.

    • Because of the small size of our staff team, all Chamber employees are required to perform their duties with a degree of flexibility that includes pitching in to help fellow team members during their busy periods.  While the Business Development Director will often be the beneficiary of this policy, he or she will also be expected to assist others during their busy times.

    • The position is primarily an office-based position, but sometimes requires some light to moderate physical work, such as carrying and storing event supplies.  As a member of the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber staff, the Business Development Director will be required to work equally with fellow Chamber employees on organization-wide, mission-critical activities, including assisting with major Chamber events. Often during those events it will be necessary to be on his or her feet for long period of time with substantial walking and be available and visible from start to finish.

    • This position requires that the individual holding it has his or her own transportation (the Chamber does reimburse employees for mileage incurred during the course of business but not for mileage to and from home), a valid Alabama Driver License, sufficient current automobile insurance, and their own mobile phone.

    • The position will require some travel. This will likely include attendance at certain regional and state business development meetings, as well as some attendance at governmental meetings.   The Chamber covers all business travel expenses on these instances.

    • As with all positions at the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber, the ideal candidate must understand the importance of flexibility pertaining to duties, willingness to take on new tasks, and must understand the importance of maintaining confidential information at all times.

The Chamber is an equal opportunity employer.
